YOUR POSITION WITH TNC

Reporting to the CEO and as a member of the Executive Leadership Team, the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer (CMCO) is responsible for creating innovative marketing and communications strategies that accelerate our strategies, build our global brand, leading to increased awareness, fundraising revenue, relevance and respect across diverse audiences, and the general public in the US and in key international markets. Our ideal candidate possesses tremendous communication and leadership skills, with proven success in traditional and innovative marketing campaigns across the broad spectrum of today’s marketing channels. We are looking for a ground-breaking, global leader with strategic, creative, and financial acumen as well as a strong business intellect and passion to take our organization to the next level.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Chief Marketing and Communications Officer (CMCO) leads all aspects of marketing and communications, working with TNC’s business units in support of growing the organization’s global conservation strategy. The CMCO develops and leads a marketing and communications plan to achieve the organization’s conservation, fundraising, and visibility goals. They are charged with raising the profile of The Nature Conservancy with targeted audiences, including current and potential members and donors, foundations, corporations, governments, and influencers around the globe. In partnership with business units, the CMCO will also lead the diversification of our brand, marketing, and communications efforts with youth and communities of color.

Reporting to the CEO, the CMCO devotes significant time and resources to organizational leadership responsibilities and works on a regular basis with the Board of Directors, regional managing directors, state and country program directors, other senior conservation leaders and key external influencers and high-level donors. They will manage and collaborate with a highly distributed team of over 130 people.They work closely with executive leadership to coordinate messaging and align marketing strategies that build critical support and funding to enable The Nature Conservancy to fulfill its mission. 

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

Growth driver: In partnership with Development and Business Units, play a leading role in creating and managing an enterprise-wide plan for diversifying TNC members, partners, and stakeholders. Lead the design of TNC’s brand vision and the implementation of a comprehensive marketing and communications plan that diversifies TNC’s audiences within the US and globally.Serve as an advisor to the CEO and Global TNC Board to develop a thought-leadership approach that showcases TNC’s global strategies, solutions, and partnerships, all to ensure the TNC brand and mission is trusted, respected, and supported. Serve as a member of TNC’s executive leadership team, contributing to overall organizational strategies and representing the priorities of the marketing, communications (internal and external), and storytelling functions. Participate in promoting an organizational culture that values long-term strategic thinking, creativity/innovation, and high performance.

Chief storyteller: Lead the development of break-through creative to ensure meaningful, personal connections between TNC’s work and current and new audiences. Safeguard and disseminate news about TNC and build our global communications efforts in an authentic multi-lingual program aimed at building TNC´s reputation as a truly global organization.. Oversee multi-stakeholder communication strategies to ensure that messaging and communications efforts across all TNC entities expand our brand position and illuminate our work. Focus on diversifying TNC’s community by engaging people of color and connecting with all age groups. Collaborate with other organizations to cultivate conservation content and build storytelling capability throughout the environmental community. Serve as one of the primary representatives of TNC to US and global media outlets.

Internal Network Lead: Ensure an effective internal communications strategy and oversee an internal communications team that enhances connection, curiosity, and collaboration among a diverse TNC global network. Work collaboratively as a partner across the organization to solicit input and coordinate the participation of conservation, science, development, operations and all state and global business units.

Innovation catalyst: Create breakthrough member and audience touchpoints and enhanced engagement by experimenting with new technology platforms, alternative media, new tools, and techniques. Primary focus on diversifying marketing and communications towards youth and communities of color. Build and expand key influencers to tell our story to new audiences in a compelling, authentic way.

Capability builder: Build TNC team member capacity for powerful communications, story-telling and marketing across a diverse global network. Manage a team of over 130 people, distributed across the US and around the world. Matrix-manage communications and marketing with representatives from throughout TNC. Identify top talent to grow, lead, and mentor a strong strategic marketing, communications, and storytelling team that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Fifteen years senior level experience as a marketing and communications leader- preferably in mission-driven, non-profit, global organization.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing creative content across multiple marketing channels (including B2B) that yield powerful, measurable results.
  • Experience in leading and managing a large multi-disciplinary and dispersed team.
  • Experience communicating with and presenting to diverse audiences including government officials, donors, board members, employees, outside partners, or equivalent.
  • High energy, forward thinking, creative individual with high ethical standards

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated experience in marketing and communications to youth and communities of color in the US and experience working in global markets.
  • Extensive global work experience and foreign language skills preferred. (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Mandarin)
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural marketing department or organization.  Someone who can organically bring multi-cultural perspectives.
  • Experience leading marketing and communications within a federated or distributed field model.
  • Outstanding leadership and visionary qualities and ability to work effectively with and through others in a decentralized and geographically dispersed organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop clear, targeted branding and marketing strategies tailored for different audiences and channels.  Must be adept at evolving marketing strategies as the organization grows and changes. This should include deep experience across all traditional and social marketing platforms with a particular familiarity with marketing automation tools and experience with Digital Transformation.
  • Experience and interest in targeted fundraising for marketing and communications.
  • Must possess positive interpersonal, diplomatic, and negotiation skills that can be applied to internal and external relationships with diverse personalities.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills coupled with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Work effectively and pragmatically under pressure within a variety of simultaneous initiatives and issues, including acute (e.g., crisis) or reputational communication scenarios.
  • Proven leadership, managerial and motivational abilities to implement a strategic vision and manage change to meet the needs of changing funding environments.
  • A proven ability to drive success across a variety of budget-based scenarios.
  • A proven ability to build relationships and drive influence at executive and Board of Director levels.
