Reporting to the Chief Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Officer (CEDIO) and working closely with the Vice President, Human Resources, the National Audubon Society seeks is first Senior Director, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI). The Senior Director, EDI will be primarily responsible for implementing a multi-year cohesive Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (EDIB) strategy for the staff and members of the National Audubon Society.
Building on the past work and investment of Audubon, this is a unique opportunity to play a key leadership role to support one of the nation’s premiere and oldest conservation organization to advance a culture of belonging as it marks its 115th year anniversary. Audubon’s mission is to protect birds and the places they need, today and tomorrow.

- Support the CEDIO to ensure that data driven scalable multi-year EDIB solutions are applied across the organization.
- Support the CEDIO with identifying and pitching foundations and high-capacity donors to invest in Audubon’s nationwide EDIB work.
- Support Audubon to deeply listen to and learn from leaders of color in the Environmental Justice (EJ) space.
- Resulting in the development of Audubon’s theory of change and a multi-year national initiative of what humble role Audubon could play in the EJ space specifically supporting the reversal of environmental injustice in communities of color.
- Work in meaningful collaboration with the members of the HR team to integrate EDIB strategies into all aspect of Audubon’s organizational culture.
- Contribute to the vision and strategy for the organization’s nationwide EDIB work in alignment with Audubon’s overall strategic direction.
- Work with teams to develop and achieve highly ambitious EDIB OKRs.
- Serve as entry point for internal EDIB conflict resolution and Restorative Inclusion Practices
- At the direction of the (CEDIO), work with Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to develop goals and plans for their EDIB work.
- Consult and advise ERGs on implementation of strategies, priorities, programming, budgeting, and timeframes.
- Project manage multi-year training for national staff and members on anti-oppression, anti-subordination, unconscious bias, inclusive behaviors, and inclusive leadership.
- Identify and develop strategies to correct for structural barriers to EDIB.
- Launch EDIB communities of practice with national staff and Audubon’s membership that highlight success stories across the organization; facilitate cross-departmental collaboration and peer-to-peer learning.
- Develop talent pipelines to support diverse leadership teams in concert with the Human Resources department
- Help execute annual EDIB survey of national staff and Audubon’s membership, acquiring data to evaluate and monitor patterns and trends, producing and analyzing reports, in partnership with the Human Resources department

Qualifications and Experience
Demonstrated Execution to Outcomes
- Proven experience in the field of EDIB, including successfully developing and implementing multi-year strategic plans, establishing metrics quantitively tracking progress in matrixed organizations.
- Keen understanding of how to lead and support organizational change; empower people, influence colleagues, and manage conflict; preferably at an organization with a complex matrixed structure.
- Significant experience collaborating across departments and/or divisions at a large, complex organization.

- Proven ability to quantitively track progress to goals to drive organizational change and reinforce accountability.
- Exceptional communications and interpersonal skills, the ability to build trusting, productive relationships with a wide range of partners and stakeholders.

- A Bachelor’s degree and/or advanced degree in a related field. However, education does not take the place of robust/relevant eight to ten years of work experience.
- A demonstrated track record in achieving results in the EDIB arena.
