Description

Donor Privacy Case Makes It to the Supreme Court

Your Help Is Needed!

The Nonprofit Alliance is filing an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court supporting the need to maintain donors’ privacy. This brief has a fundraising perspective which could be joined by individual nonprofits with the goal of presenting a 'nonprofit community view' to the U.S. Supreme Court.

We need your nonprofit organization to sign on, too. Signatories must commit their support by February 23 - a very fast turnaround.

To help nonprofits understand why you want to sign this, and what the court case means for your own work, we invite you (and any relevant decision-makers from your organization) to join us for this briefing.

Context: In the second week of January, the U.S. Supreme Court granted certiorari (meaning it has agreed to hear the case) addressing the issue of mandatory disclosure of donor information to state officials. The states do this by requiring the inclusion of the Form 990 Schedule B as part of registering to solicit in the state. That schedule lists sensitive information, including name, address, and amount of gifts for all donors giving $5,000 or more in the reporting year.

If donor privacy is truly a vital piece of business to the fundraising community, then individual nonprofits ought to step up and say so.

For questions and requests for the outline of the brief: Bob Tigner at rtigner@tnpa.org or 202-293-9640. Don’t hesitate to direct your colleagues or clients to do so as well.
