Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent international organization that provides medical care to the people who need it most. The organization cares for people affected by conflict, disease outbreaks, disasters, and social exclusion in more than 70 countries. MSF offers medical humanitarian assistance solely based on need, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, or politics. ROLE OVERVIEW

As the Associate Director of Community Fundraising at Doctors Without Borders USA, you will leverage high-profile connections and innovative events to achieve ambitious fundraising and awareness goals. This dynamic role combines celebrity and influencer marketing with peer-to-peer and livestream fundraising to unlock massive untapped potential. You will create and lead long-term strategies to engage high-profile donors for marketing and fundraising events and serve as an expert in this field. Additionally, you will oversee our peer-to-peer fundraising and streaming team, actively planning and supporting events such as concerts, comedy shows, video-gaming marathons, and digital fundraising campaigns. Your leadership will be crucial in activating fundraising events swiftly during emergencies.

 You will collaborate across the organization to engage artists, content creators, and other high-profile people in mutually beneficial ways while managing risks and upholding our brand values. Amplifying the voices of creators with personal ties to the places we work – from Gaza and Sudan to Haiti and Mexico - is vital to reaching diverse communities. You will engage artists and supporters from diverse backgrounds, fostering inclusive fundraising communities and inspiring passion and loyalty through meaningful storytelling.

DEPARTMENT ACCOUNTABILITIES

Prospecting 

Pursue strategic opportunities in coherence with MSF USA's strategy, that create long-term value for the movement by identifying and developing new audience segments or donors for its mission. 

Donor Cultivation, Engagement and Management 

Build and maintain relationships with at least 5 high-profile influencers or fundraising communities annually, with a goal of securing commitments to help drive funds, awareness, or revenue for MSF. At the simplest level, update donors on activities. At a more complex level, build long-term relationships that drive brand awareness and increase ROI from digital ad campaigns by 25-50%. Take responsibility for designing, developing, and supporting celebrity & influencer engagement strategies for fundraising.

Fundraising 

Secure reliable, sustainable, and efficient resources in alignment with MSF-US commitments. 

Brand Positioning
Drive awareness and consideration through brand positioning based on the brand strategy and implement brand plans. 
Best-in-Class Fundraising Systems and Capabilities 

Deploy and champion the latest technological systems and capabilities that push the boundaries of what Development can produce for its donors.  

ROLE SPECIFIC OUTCOMES

Fundraising Events - Development & Design
Leads the development and execution of a multi-year strategy for peer-to-peer fundraising, targeting a 15% increase in event revenue and donor engagement each year. Oversees ideation, planning, performance, and business case development for events. Cultivates relationships with high-level partners and stakeholders and makes strategic decisions based on data and market trends. Responsible for setting and achieving KPIs.
Marketing Strategy - Celebrity and Influencer

Lead and develop critical components of the celebrity and influencer marketing strategy, serving as a subject matter expert for current and Doctors Without Borders USA-relevant celebrities and influencers. Facilitates cross-departmental alignment and integration with donor communications and digital strategies.

Digital Marketing Strategy - Peer-to-Peer and Livestream Fundraising

Lead the development of digital marketing strategies and a prioritized roadmap for peer-to-peer and livestream fundraising. Oversee development and execution of events and campaigns with a target of increasing digital engagement by 20% and driving revenue growth.

Leadership & Direction


Identify, communicate, and lead the function's strategy and action plan within a business area or department while explaining how it ties into Doctors Without Borders’ mission, vision, and values. Lead the community fundraising team to achieve specific targets, ensuring alignment with MSF’s mission and driving at least a 15% year-over-year increase in event revenue and donor engagement.

 Marketing Innovation


Leads a comprehensive marketing innovation and testing strategy, and roadmap across a large function or area. Fosters a culture of continuous innovation, curiosity, and learning that drives significant growth.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

  • Reports to the Senior Director of Integrated Channel Marketing.
  • Collaborates closely with MSF-USA’s development, major gifts, digital advertising, and social media teams in prioritizing and navigating celebrity and influencer relationships and events.
  • Directly manages Peer-to-Peer and Streaming team. Coaches, mentors and develops team, comprised of the Senior Marketing Manager for Peer-to Peer and Streaming, the Senior Associate for Peer-to-Peer and Streaming, and the Fundraising Events Intern.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

The Associate Director of Community Fundraising and Influencer Marketing, is a self-motivated, creative, curious, and collaborative leader and team player with:  

  • At least 10 years of relevant combined experience including expertise in managing authentic relationships with celebrities and influencers and a proven track record of developing and executing successful creator-driven campaigns and events
  • Proven expertise in community/peer-to-peer fundraising.
  • Strong competency in cross-cultural communication, messaging, and representation, on issues of culture, ethics, diversity, equity, and inclusion - for example, on race, gender, religion, LGBTQ+ issues, disability. Proven experience in fostering diverse and inclusive communities.
  • Strong knowledge and networking capabilities in the entertainment and media industry and landscape, with the ability to forge new partnerships and collaborations.
  • Strong knowledge of social media trends, influencers, celebrities, creators, and popular culture needed to identify and prioritize opportunities.

 Preferred but not required:

  • Experience with the above in a nonprofit setting.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS 

Requires 15%-30% travel, primarily within the US, to support fundraising events and meet with key influencers and donors.

COMPENSATION

$124,346 to $186,518; all new employees will be compensated from the minimum to midpoint based on experience
