JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Direct Response Marketing executes and optimizes all broad‑based fundraising and membership marketing programs for the National Trust for Historic Preservation in partnership with the Annual Giving Leadership Team. Responsible for generating $6 million in annual revenue this fiscal year and growing a 50,000‑member national program, the director oversees omni‑channel campaigns that engage, retain, and upgrade donors giving less than $1,000. This role blends data‑driven direct marketing, compelling storytelling, and disciplined project management to grow the Annual Fund and strengthen donor relationships that sustain the Trust’s mission.

DUTIES

  • Direct the execution of integrated membership and annual giving campaigns that drive donor acquisition, retention, reactivation, and upgrades across direct mail, email, digital and emerging channels.
  • Develop, in partnership with direct response agencies and the annual giving team, a cohesive, donor‑centric omni‑channel strategy that communicates the Trust’s mission consistently and effectively across all touchpoints.
  • Create and oversee compelling mass‑market fundraising content, sourcing and repurposing stories from across the organization to motivate broad‑based donors.
  • Manage direct‑response agency partners, ensuring strategies are mission‑aligned, cost‑effective, and optimized for long‑term donor value and retention.
  • Set annual and multi‑year goals for donor acquisition, retention, and upgrades, defining KPIs and reporting regularly on performance, insights, and opportunities.
  • Direct segmentation strategies, campaign calendars, and creative development, reviewing and approving final assets to ensure accuracy, quality, and brand alignment.
  • Partner to design and test upgrade pathways that move Annual Fund donors into the midlevel program ($1,000+), including prospect identification and targeted messaging.
  • Coordinate closely with Donor Services to ensure accurate campaign coding, tracking, and reporting, maintaining data integrity and reliable revenue attribution across all channels.
  • Lead complex project workflows involving multiple internal teams and external vendors, ensuring campaigns launch on time, on budget, and with high operational and creative quality.
  • Support additional strategic initiatives that strengthen the Annual Fund and advance organization‑wide fundraising priorities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Commitment to the National Trust’s values and mission to preserve places that tell our stories, reflect our culture, and shape our shared American experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business, communications, or related field preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in direct‑response fundraising, mass‑market fundraising, or content‑driven marketing. Must have experience with both online and offline direct marketing.
  • Strong copywriting skills with the ability to develop engaging donor‑facing content from diverse sources.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in content, data, and campaign execution.
  • Experience managing external vendors or agencies, with an understanding of production workflows and performance management.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage complex, multi‑stakeholder campaigns, balance competing priorities, and meet tight deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, including issue identification and prioritization.
  • Familiarity with CRM and eCRM platforms; RevolutionCRM and Engaging Networks experience preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments in a hybrid, matrixed organization.
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite.
  • A positive, team‑oriented mindset and demonstrated experience training, motivating and managing staff.
